I have seen many guitars with problems of detuning in the middle of a song, and it’s not the string that was just played, it’s the whole guitar. Fanned fret guitars are great for electric players that use a whammy bar because there is less pressure on each string when you use the bar to bend notes or pull up high notes.

When playing lead & fingerstyle I feel a big difference because the intonation is much easier to tune. The string spacing allows for a very precise tuning. When you have an idea of what notes you want to play, you can more easily find them in among the strings-quickly! And no more overstraining your hand/neck.

Another advantage is when you are downtuning, you can use lighter gauge strings. It’s much easier to play, and you will find you don’t need as much string to sound the same volume. This is a big one for me because I always feel like I’m using too much string when playing, so this was really a helpful benefit for me.

The main con is the cost of these guitars. They do tend to be more expensive than regular guitars. Most people will not notice the difference in quality of sound of a fanned fret guitar versus a non-fanned fret guitar. • The guitar’s setup and intonation may be wrong.  In this case, you may need a professional guitar setup job done to set the proper intonation.

Are Open Chords Bad?

No.  Open chords are not bad.  They are important chord forms on electric guitar.

• They are easier to play than barre chords.

How Do You Make Open Chords Sound Good On Electric Guitar

• Practice and get better at playing open chords.
• Use different amplifier settings.  Experiment with your amp’s tone stack and see if you can dial in a good guitar tone for your open or barre chords.
• Check the intonation and setup of your guitar.  A quick way to do this is to compare the open string note with the 12th fret note on a string.  If they are not the same note and the 12th fret note is a little sharp or flat, you have an intonation issue and need a guitar tech to take a look at it.

My Guitar Is In Tune But Sounds Bad

• Be sure that you aren’t muting other strings when playing a chord.  This used to be a problem for me when I was a beginner.
• Make sure that your fingers are placed right behind the frets and not too far back on the neck.  If your fingers are too far back on the neck, it will make the guitar sound out of tune.

Why Do Open Chords Sound Bad With Distortion?

This is due to the fact that distortion adds more high frequency content to the sound.  When you play chords with distortion, it will make the sound bulky and sharp.

The solution is to use less distortion (maybe even none at all).  You can also use a different amplifier setting by rolling off some of the bass or treble frequencies.

To me, distortion sounds best with power chords.

How To Improve Open Chords Sound On Electric Guitar

Here are some things you can do to play open chords on your electric guitar so they sound good:

• Practice playing chords with less distortion.  You can also start by playing them through a clean amplifier setting so you aren’t adding heavy distortion.  You can experiment with different amp tone controls and see what sounds best for your chord sound.
• Experiment with different types of open chords.  Open chords are usually satisfying for most people to play on an electric guitar, but some of them sound better than others.  This is because of the frequency content of the chord.  For example, an open A major chord will sound different than an open E major chord.
• Practice playing chords on different parts of the fretboard.  This can give you a more complete musical experience.
• Experiment with new techniques for playing chords on your electric guitar.

Yes.  But, in order to tune a baritone guitar to E standard, you will need to change strings and your intonation to make it tune correctly.

What Is A Baritone Guitar?

A baritone guitar is a type of guitar with a longer (27.5 inches) scale length and usually played with thicker strings and heavier gauge.  Some can even have a scale length of up to 30 inches.

The main reason for having one is the sound.  It is rich, gutsy and has a more “bassy” tone.

How To Tune A Baritone Guitar To Standard

The tuning procedure is basically the same as any other guitar but there are a few things to keep in mind:

• Pick up some very light guitar strings like 8 or 9 gauge at the high E string.
• You will probably need to change you intonation at the bridge of your guitar.
• After tuning, check your neck to see if you need a truss rod adjustment.

Advantages And Disadvantages To Tuning Baritone Guitars To E Standard

However, there are a few advantages to tuning an electric baritone guitar to standard:

• It will allow you to play more songs on the instrument so you don’t need to have more guitars to get more tuning. This is by far the biggest benefit.
• People will big hands may find baritone guitars easier to play due to the longer scale length.
• Light strings with good tension tend to feel amazing to play.
• Can get a very lively sound.
• Super rich sounding mids in the tone.

The disadvantages are few.  Basically I find that sometimes the tone is a little thin with not a lot of bottom end due to the lighter strings.

Typical Baritone Guitar Tuning

These guitars are usually tuned baritone standard which is B-E-A-D-F#-B.  this makes it a good tuning because it is half way between a standard guitar tuning and bass tuning.  And it also allows you to use the same chord shapes as a standard tuned electric guitar.

Can A Regular Guitar Be A Baritone Guitar?

Yes, technically, you can tune a regular guitar to a baritone standard tuning.  To be honest, I would not recommend it because it doesn’t sound great and the guitar doesn’t play very well.  But, if you still want to try, there are some things to keep in mind:

• Use heavier strings.  They will get floppy.
• You may need to increase the size of the slots of the nut to accommodate for heavier gauge strings.  Not doing this can make playing chords hard to keep in tune.
• You will definitely need to reset the intonation.  But it may not be able to be intonated properly because there may not be enough tension on the saddles.
• The neck may need to be adjusted using the truss rod since the tension will be different than when it is tuned to standard.

How Low Can You Tune A Baritone Guitar?

You can get quite low.  How low really depends on your guitar, the string gauge you are using, scale length, etc.  My recommendation is to just experiment and go as low as you can where the guitar still maintains tune and the strings don’t get too floppy.

Other Baritone Guitar Tuning Options

Some of my favorite alternate tunings for your baritone guitar:

• Drop A – just drop the B string down one full step to an A
• Double Drop A – kind of similar to double drop D on standard guitar.  In this case, you do the drop A on both B strings – the top and bottom string.  Note, with this tuning, your first and second strings are no longer in a perfect 4th interval, they are in a minor 3rd.  This will change your scale fingerings – so it is something to get used to.
• A-E-A-D-E-A – this is the baritone version of DADGAD tuning on a standard guitar.
• G-D-A-D-E-A – this is getting very low and you can get some beautiful chord sounds with this tuning.
• A-D-G-C-E-A – This is basically standard baritone a step lower.

Carbon fibre is incredible.  It’s tougher and more rigid than steel, but it’s a lot lighter.  It can withstand extremely high temperatures, doesn’t expand much when heated, and is chemically resistant.  It’s comprised of interlaced carbon strands that are weaved together to form a cloth, then moulded and cast to become solid and formed.
