Why do my guitar pickups sound weak?

There are a few reasons why your guitar pickups sound weak:

• The height of the pickup might be too low. If this pickup height is not correct it can cause your pickups to sound weak.
• The “hot spot” on your pickups is higher than you need, it could cause output to flow out in an unnatural way and affect the sound that you are looking for.
• The pickups might be defective.
• Your guitar’s wiring might be faulty. If you have a faulty wiring that is shorting out somewhere, it can cause your pickups to sound weak or a sound that is very different from what you are used to hearing from your guitar.

Troubleshooting Guitar Pickups

Guitar Pickup Not Loud Enough

Well, first thing to check is the height of your pickup. The reason why this might be happening is because you are using them too low, or the electric guitar pickups are not properly seated.

What Causes Hum From Single Coil Guitar Pickups?

The hum from single coil pickups for guitars is due to the electromagnetic interference (EMI) created when the strings vibrate across a magnetic field. With these types of guitar pickups, the rotation of the string produces a current that generates an opposing magnetic field. This magnetic field is what vibrates the strings producing sound.

The sound from the strings creates an oscillating current that flows across the single coil pickup. This current induces a voltage in other nearby single coil pickups or nearby metal objects causing interference with other frequencies in the signal chain, which creates hum.

How To Reduce Hum From Single Coil Pickups?

Shielding

This is an excellent DIY option. One of the best ways to reduce hum produced by single coil pickups is to use shielding. The idea behind this is to use a conductive material or ground plane to shield the magnetic field created by the single coil pickups. By shielding it substantially reduces the interference with other signals and reduces hum.

The most common material used for shielding is copper foil tape, which can be purchased from any hardware store or online.

Single Coil Pickups

The single coil guitar pickup was the original electric amplifier for the electric guitar. It is said to have been first invented by a guitar player named George Beauchamp, with the support of none other than Adolph Rickenbacker, during the 1920’s.

A single coil pickup has two magnets and one copper wire coil attached to a multimeter. This device changes the voltage as the guitar strings vibrate over the magnetic field from each pole piece to pick up the electronic signal – whether it is passive or active pickup. It’s this direct connection to the strings that made the guitar electrified, but also created a lot of uncontrollable noise.

This was the standard until the humbucker came to the market.

Humbucker Pickups

Until the mid-1950’s the humbucker pickup style was not widely known. Single coils pickups were how you transmitted the electricity to make your guitar scream. But they delivered a lot of extra buzzing and humming on the guitar strings.

This was common in other electric guitar equipment, particularly speakers and microphones. So in 1934, the dual coil or humbucking coil pickups were designed and utilized to improve the performance of this type of equipment.

A year later, this twin coil humbucker design was installed in a guitar. It took that electricity and sent it through two coils with two magnets set up to oppose each other. Bottom line, the hum was gone, the sound was smoother and heavier, and the humbucker pickup was born with a fuller sound.

In 1955, a Gibson engineer named Seth Lover, filed a patent for his design of this device. Gretsch guitars followed suit and humbuckers have been the standard ever since.

Pickups are available in different sizes and shapes. Most importantly, different pickups serve different purposes. For instance, the pickup used for playing guitar music cannot be used for metal and hard rock genres, and vice versa. The variety not just pertains to the music genre but also the kind of guitar. For instance, electric guitars and acoustic guitars have pickup classifications of their own. And they have their types of guitar pickups sub-categories as well.

For the sake of brevity and some basic understanding, we’ll be focusing on pickups for electric guitars only. But before that, let’s briefly understand what a guitar pickup truly is.

What is a Guitar Pickup?

A pickup, technically called a transducer, is essentially a magnet wrapped in wire. The wrapping helps transform your strings’ vibration into a microelectronic signal. In layman terms, guitar pickups help amplify your guitar’s tone. The insulated copper wire coil and magnet work in tandem to create the necessary effect. They create a magnetic field surrounding the strings. This magnetic field changes when you hit a string, causing the wire coil to grab an induced voltage and current. A signal is then created, which gets transferred to the amplifier, creating the tone of your electric guitar.

Electric Guitar Pickup Types

The following are the three major best electric guitar for the money types of guitar pickups.

Single-Coil Pickup

Single-coil pickups, as the name indicates, incorporate a single magnet. The regular Fender Stratocaster uses a single-coil pickup, for example. These Strat pickups are widely used, which is why their tone cannot be defined categorically. Generally, they are considered to be clearer and sharper than P90s pickup or humbuckers. They are thinner, brighter, and more focused compared to the other two pickup types.

The genres that typically complement a single-coil pickup are surf and country. Most funk guitarists play single-coil Stratocasters, in fact. For rhythm guitar components on funk, disco, soul, and R&B tracks, single-coils pickups are ideal. You may use them for soloing as well. However, you must be able to control the guitar feedback loops, which are inevitable. Perhaps the only area single-coil pickups falter a bit is in their ability to handle high distortion levels, which are usually synonymous with metal and hard rock genres. They can manage marginally distorted signals, but nothing higher than that.

Thanks to their great pairing of pickups with the Fender Stratocaster, they are often referred to as Strat or Fender style pickups. The Telecaster popularized its very own variant of single-coil pickups with some minor modifications added, like changes to the base plates. A widely known drawback to the pickup is its vulnerability to electrical interference, which results in a buzz or “hum” noise at higher volumes. This hum type is referred to as the “60 cycle” hum.

Humbucker Guitar Pickups

A humbucker is basically a couple of single-coil pickups functioning as a team. Unlike a single-coil pickup, humbuckers “buck” hums – therefore, the name. The bucking is thanks to the two coils canceling out the extraneous noise of each other using reversed polarity. The by-product of this being the two coils producing a warm, big sound which has become synonymous with Gibson guitars’ fat, buttery sounds.

Compared to single-coils, a humbucker has a fairly warm tone, making it quite suitable for the jazz genre. It’s believed that the humbucker pickups came to be due to the need for more output and volume from pickups while also eliminating the loud hum single-coil pickups generated. Thanks to this increased output, humbucker pickups do significantly better than single-coil pickups when it comes to genres that require high distortion levels. Country and surf are the only two genres that humbuckers are not cut out for. Otherwise, they shine in pretty much all scenarios. A lot of all this has also got a fair bit to do with the build and physics of a humbucker.

A fairly recent addition to humbucker pickups is “coil-tapping”, which has only heightened the pickups’ popularity. The coil tapping ensures only one coil of the two engage when you pull a knob. This means you get a significantly cleaner and brighter single-coil pickups sound. Also, this addition offers players using humbuckers a lot more tonal choices right at their fingertips.

P90 or Soap Bar Pickup

The P90s are somewhere in between a single-coil pickups and a humbucker pickup. It’s basically a hybrid of the two, but more of a single-coil pickup variant. Since P90s are technically single-coil pickups, their sensitivity is pretty much the same as a single-coil, 60/50 cycle. However, instead of magnets wrapped in a coil, like they do in single-coils, P90s come with magnets featured beneath the coil. And due to this arrangement, a P90’s single-coils look bigger than traditional single-coils. Its bobbins are wider and shorter. Another major difference is that P90 pickups incorporate bar magnets beneath their pole pieces. Regular single-coil pickups employ rod magnets instead.

A P90’s output is higher compared to single-coil pickups, but they lack the output that humbuckers are known for. A P90 usually has slightly more depth compared to regular single coils, but again not as intense as humbuckers. P90s are ideal for rock and blues genres – not hard rock, however. Despite having its strongholds, a P90 is usually considered to be versatile.

P90s pickups were seen on several Gibson guitars of yore, such as the Gibson Les Paul. Also, unlike humbuckers and single-coils, a P90 comes in different forms and shapes so that it could be compatible with different guitar builds when making an electric guitar. For instance, the soap bar shape was made to work with SG and Les Paul guitar body types alone.

Piezo Pickups

Piezo pickups are an alternative to magnetic pickups that we find on a large majority of electric guitars and the technology behind it actually predates that of the magnetic pickups. Unlike magnetic pickups which translate string vibrations into electric signals using the magnetic field created by the magnet(s) and wrapped copper wires, a piezo pickup actually picks up the actual vibrations made by the guitar strings. This is the reason why this kind of pickups are most commonly used to magnify the sound of acoustic instruments, such as a nylon string guitar.

Now, as for piezo pickups on electric guitars, the pickups there commonly use a kind of compressed crystal which receives and measures the pressure of the string vibrations in order to translate it to electrical current. With piezo pickups, the electric signal is preamplified before it reaches the guitar’s output.

Tone-wise, electric guitars with piezo pickups produce a less warm but brighter tone compared to magnetic pickups and this allows for a high degree of tone clarity and string articulation. Therefore, we can probably say that piezo pickups really replicate the actual acoustic energy tone-wise. One particular advantage with piezo pickups (that many guitarists will appreciate) is that since there is no magnetic field involved here, you will pick up very little hum while playing an electric guitar fitted with a piezo pickup.

J Style

Now, it goes without saying that you want to choose a pickup system that matches your style and tonal needs. On that note, it’s time to look at the 3 main types of acoustic guitar pickups.

Soundhole Pickups

These are very similar to electric guitar pickups, employing a magnetic field to pick up the vibrations of the strings. A typical soundhole pickup is comprised of a magnet upon which an insulated copper wire is wrapped; this combination is what creates the magnetic field. And like the name suggests, the unit can be mounted besides the soundhole or on top of it as bridging.

Soundhole pickups tend to have a warm tone with lots of string detail. They’re also user-friendly, and easier to install than other systems. The only problem is that they don’t work with nylon-strung axes.

Of all forms of undesired feedback you might experience as a guitarist, nothing quite compares to microphony. Also known as microphonic feedback guitar sound, this happens when your guitar’s pickup system goes out of control and cooks up a sudden high-pitched shriek. You’re left with no option but to fold up the performance and try rectifying the problem.

Why Do Guitar Pickups Go Microphonic?

Like the name indicates, microphony happens when the different guitar pickups start behaving like microphones. They pick up unwanted sound from outside and mash it up with the signal coming from your guitar. It’s this concoction that turns into a squealing screech as it travels down the signal chain and into your speakers.

So, why exactly do guitar pickups go microphonic? We’ll find out in a bit, but let’s first take a quick look at how guitar pickup works. This way, you’ll be in a position to understand what goes on when you experience microphonic feedback.

Anatomy of a Guitar Pickup

A guitar pickup is a transducer at its core; that is, a device that converts energy from one form to another. It transforms the vibrational energy produced by guitar strings into sound that can be amplified, recorded and/or transmitted. In that sense, a pickup can be categorized as a sonic transducer. This family includes all devices that convert sound into electric current and vice-versa; microphones, speakers, etc.

All sonic transducers are electro-magnetic in operation, leveraging Faraday’s Law of Induction. This states that an electric conductor exposed to a changing magnetic field will have a current induced in it. In other words, a wire wrapped around a magnet will have an electric current flowing ‘inside’ it if there’s a disturbance nearby. A disturbance like the one created by the movement of a guitar string when you pluck it.

Of course, not every magnet-and-wire combo can capture this disturbance properly and turn it into the twangy sound you hear through the speakers. Guitar pickups use magnets made of alnico/ferrite. Learn how are guitar pickups made here.  Both materials produce strong magnetic fields and retain their potency even when exposed to harsh conditions. The permanent magnet will then have a finely enameled copper wire wound around it in turns numbering in thousands.

It’s this coil that picks up changes in the magnetic field that occur when you strum the strings. The current registered as a result is then transmitted to the amp, where it’s boosted and sent down the chain. For a good measure, the strings are made of a ferromagnetic material (i.e. one that becomes magnetized when exposed to another magnet) like steel. The result is rather obvious — you have an additional magnetic field inducing a current in the coil when the strings vibrate.

Microphonic Humbucker Feedback: When Pickups go Rogue

You’ll recall that guitar pickups are classed as sonic transducers; microphones are yet another member of the family. So you can expect a few similarities in anatomy — some types of mics use a setup similar to that of guitar pickups. You have a diaphragm that moves when subjected to sound waves, with a wire-wound magnet located close by.

There’s also a bit of overlap on the functional side. Point a powered mic to your guitar amp as you play it, and it’ll definitely pick up some sound that you can then amplify. This is something you can take advantage of when playing an acoustic on stage — you’ll want to mount the mic on a stand to free your hands.  Or you can add pickup to acoustic guitar.

How about substituting a mic with a pickup? No, afraid not. While a microphone is designed to ‘hear’ any kind of sound, guitar pickups are tailored to only register the intricate vibrations of guitar strings. You might recall from your physics class that sound needs a medium to travel through (solid, liquid, or gas). Vibrations can travel without this hindrance. And that means a guitar pickup will work even in a vacuum — the same cannot be said of microphones.

But what gives pickups the magical ability to pick up the strings’ subtle movements while shutting out all other vibrations? It’s down to the way they’re built. Unlike microphones, pickups don’t have any components moving as they operate. They’re often dipped in wax to fill up all the tiny spaces between the windings, leaving little (if any) room for movement.

And so, microphonic feedback is usually a sign that your pickups are beginning to lose their original shape. What happens is that the windings become loose enough to vibrate under the influence of external forces. These secondary vibrations disturb the magnetic field, creating a signal that’s sent through to your amp and loudspeaker. This comes in the form of a high-pitched howl because the wire on your pickups is extremely thin, and thus vibrates at a very high frequency. To add salt to injury, the unwanted sound will inevitably cause the coil to vibrate further — you don’t have to be a genius to guess what happens from there.

This also explains why microphonic feedback varies so wildly. When you’re playing at a low-to-moderate volume, the sound waves coming from your speakers aren’t strong enough to initiate secondary vibrations. But crank the volume up, and the feedback becomes a screeching nightmare — one that also has enough energy to sustain itself.

How To Fix Microphonic Guitar Pickups

We’ve just hinted that you can rein in your squealing pickups by starving them off external energy — you know, avoiding high-gain situations, turning the volume down or stepping away from the speakers. But these measures might not always be effective or practical. As such, you’re better off having your pickups repotted with wax. This will be pricey, but it’s the only way to prevent the problem from growing out of hand.

Wax Potting Pickups

Wax potting, or “wax winding,” is a technique for enhancing the tone and resonance of a guitar pickup. It can also be used to give an electric guitar its vintage sound by adding wax pots to the pickup’s bobbin.

The melted wax in the pots removes unwanted microphonic feedback from your pickups, enhancing sustain and definition in your overdriven tones. Think of it as your pickup’s bass-cut control.

Wax potting pickups effectively does two things for the guitar: It lowers the frequency of resonance, and it increases the dampening. Note that these effects do not occur in equal amounts. Additionally, pots do not work on magnetic field output, they only affect electrical field output. More simply stated, pots only work on surface electricity; feedback is created from sound waves moving through a magnetic field.

The only downside of wax potting is that it adds more mass to the pickup. Pickups with lots of wax in them tend to sound muddy and have little definition, and they are harder than unpotted pickups to play cleanly. They also become very easy to microphonically clip, so be vigilant when moving them around.
